Origin of the Name

The Third Place definition: The term “third place” originates from a 1989 book, The Great Good Place, by sociologist Ray Oldenberg. He characterized third places as locations that facilitate social interaction outside of the people you live or work with and encourage “public relaxation.” They are places where you encounter “regulars,” or frequenters of a space, as well as potential new connections. Third places tend to foster light, pleasant conversation and are free from expectations of productivity.

Located within the Puget Island Gardens nursery, The Third Place is a seasonal indoor-outdoor beer garden designed to bring people together. Created as a community gathering space, it offers visitors a chance to relax, connect with friends, and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding gardens. Whether you’re attending an event, enjoying a local craft beverage, or simply taking in the scenery, The Third Place provides a welcoming atmosphere where plants, people, and community come together. Open during the growing season and closed for the winter, it’s a unique destination to experience the gardens beyond shopping for plants.
